On a cold and gray morning I was greeted by a sister who doesn’t really get on the train with me very often. Even though she’s friendly, we just don’t have a strong professional friendship. That also makes sense. It is difficult to build such a professional relationship with the sisters if they do not visit regularly. But the care moment went smoothly. Before I knew it, we were already done.
After my stairlift carried me neatly downstairs, I pushed the button to send it back to its charging station while the nurse carried my bag to the living room. We’ve re arranged the furniture since the last time she was here. So she looked around with curiosity to see where everything is now. She saw my keyboards and guitar and asked; ‘Who’s a musician here’?
‘Me’, I replied as the stairlift settled on the charging station. ‘I can play the keyboards but I’m still trying to learn the guitar’.
‘Oh, can you sing too’?
I knew I could power the keyboard quickly, but I also knew I didn’t have much time left before the nurse had to get on the next train. Luckily I didn’t need any more help, so instead of answering her question, I sat down behind the keyboard and started playing Let It Be.
When I started singing, I was surprised by the sister who started to sing along with her super beautiful singing voice. We sang the first verse and chorus together. It felt like a party and immediately had a positive influence on our mood.
There went the change in mood. From tired and sluggish, to smiling and feeling like I had more than enough energy to get through the day. I could hear in the sister’s voice that she, too, had become much happier and more relaxed.
‘Is there anything else I can do for you’? she asked before she went to get her coat. ‘No thanks, I’ll be fine. It’s time for breakfast.”
“Okay, then I wish you a nice day.” She put on her coat and walked out with a smile.
Those magical musical moments work from both sides. Not only did the sister leave in a happy mood, but she looks forward to the next time she can come and help. I believe this professional friendship has just gotten a lot better.
